EPIC Bars Bison + Turkey

23 May

One year since my first two EPIC Bars, I took two other flavors of EPIC bars for a spin.  This time around, The Hubby and I tried the Bison Bacon Cranberry and Turkey Almond Cranberry bars.  In what better place to take these energy-packed meat bars than to Mount Rainier National Park.  From Seattle looking south east of the horizon, Mt. Rainier dominates the skyline, and from that distance, it beckoned the hikers in us to see the Cascade Range peaks closer.

We invited along The Hubby’s father, Chris, who’s an avid hiker.  We knew that if there’s anyone who’d appreciate the day hike more, it’d be him.  For our mid-day sustenance, both The Hubby and Dad Chris brought along turkey and ham sandwiches, while I brought a Bison EPIC bar and a Turkey EPIC bar.

It was the EPIC Turkey bar that I tried first.  The ingredients for the EPIC Turkey bar are Turkey, Almonds, Dried Cranberries (Cranberries, Apple Juice Concentrate), Lactic Acid (not from dairy), Seasoning (Coriander, Cumin, Nutmeg, Red Pepper, Dehydrated Garlic, Paprika, Dehydrated Onion), Salt, and Celery Powder.  Although tasty, the Turkey bar is somewhat on the dry side.  I’m glad for the presence of cranberries because the bar would’ve been texturally boring otherwise.

I was pretty excited to try the EPIC Bison bar, and unlike the Turkey bar’s packaging that for some reason took some difficulty to rip open, I easily tore the Bison bar’s packaging.  Perhaps it was the excitement.  The Bison bar was moist and had more umami appeal than the Turkey bar.  The Bison Bar is made of Bison, Uncured Bacon (No Nitrites or Nitrates Added- Pork, Water, Brown Sugar, Salt, Vinegar, Celery Powder, Sea Salt), Dried Cranberries (Cranberries, Apple Juice Concentrate), Lactic Acid (not from milk), Celery Powder, and Sea Salt.  Including the uncured bacon in its ingredients is brilliant because it gave the bar a wonderful mouth-feel.  You know how it is with bacon… it’s like butter and makes everything better.

So far, we’ve tried four different EPIC bars, and if I were to rank them based on flavor satisfaction, it’d be the Bison Bacon Cranberry bar first, followed by the Beef Habanero Cherry, Turkey Almond Cranberry, and then the Lamb Currant Mint.  There are six other EPIC bars left untried by The Hubby and me, and we look forward to the day when we try them.  But not all at once.  They’re calorie-heavy after all.
